Have you read Temple Grandin on the subject of animal emotions? The definition set she's working from uses "rage" as the last-ditch all-out desperate fight of a trapped animal, like a rat caught in a coyote's mouth, and it really helped me make sense of my own emotions.
I spent my childhood and teens flaring up into a yelling rage every few days or more, and people assumed I was angry all the time, even that I ENJOYED being angry at the time (no way!), so when I was talking with my sisters recently as we dealt with my late mother's funeral and possessions, they were stunned to hear that I now lose my temper less than once a year because when I live alone and can avoid social panic triggers, I rarely need to feel that trapped by an immediate situation.
I'm certainly not fully autistic, as Temple Grandin is, but I'm highly subject to sensory overload, not just bright lights and shrill noises but the social/emotional pressures from other people, and living alone in a quiet apartment is saving my life.
